Rhonda’s Reads
(And by read I mean, listen. I listen to a lot of books)
Welcome to Rhonda’s Reads!
Pre-pandemic, I spent 3 hours a day in my car for my commute to work (grueling right??). Instead of the radio, motivational speeches, near-death experiences (I’m so intrigued by them) and comedian clips on YouTube became my listening experience on the road. Then I discovered Audible. I signed up and became obsessed with a monthly book selection. I found that the books I enjoyed were about leadership and spirituality. I’m sharing the books that I’ve listened to over the years.
I really love how the late Wayne Dyer mixed in comedy into deep spiritual thought. He had a way of explaining spirituality that was practical and so insightful.
I’m not sure why I hear buzz about Oprah being uppity, but I like her. From her experiences, I’m all ears to hear the wisdom she’s gained in her life. She’s so inspiring and I can’t wait to meet her again when she interviews me about my book on Super Soul Sunday. :)
This is a long listen but I loved his take on his presidency. I had no idea what serious situations he was dealing with while also dealing with the petty public accusations that the media was covering.
I chose to read this book because it’s one of Oprah’s most recent selections from her book club. It’s really engaging, technical and inspiring in a way that made me curious about everything.
This book was really enlightening and gave me a different view on how I consume food daily without stressing me out about it. I need to listen to it again because it really does help.
Here’s another one of Oprah’s recommendations. It’s a mix of historical stories from slavery times to the 90’s so I could relate. BUT it made me upset when talking about the slave trade. It was really long but kept me engaged. I liked how the author weaved in the history and the present.
I actually paid to pre-order this book as soon as it was available. Mainly because I like Will Smith and I thought his story might be interesting. And it is. It’s a great, well-written read. And if you grew up in the 80’s, you’ll enjoy reading (or hearing which I recommend because there’s actual music) about how hip hop was forming at the beginning of Will’s stardom.
For the Prince fanatics you know, this book would be a cool gift. It’s Morris Day’s version of his and Prince’s friendship (which was definitely not rosey all the time). Of course I enjoyed hearing about Prince from someone that knew him from his beginnings. It was just another way for me to hear more about my man.
THIS book is perfect to read over the holidays to give yourself some motivation for the new year. Even though it’s a little contrary to what I believe, I see the value in this viewpoint. Manson is basically telling us to stop being the “turn lemons to lemonade” and learn how to deal with the lemons.
This title was given to me as a gift from a friend. We were hiking in beautiful Telluride and discussing loss and my desire to write a book about the subject. The author is sharing his experience of helping families deal with the impending loss of a loved one. .
Lisa’s story sounds like it could be a movie complete with the dramatics of falling in love with who appears to be the perfect partner to only discover that she had to strategize how she was going to get rid of this dude to protect herself and her young son. Her success is inspiring after having to deal with so many trials in her life.
This is a deep read about being in the NOW. You have to be ready for this one. It’s definitley thought-provoking and a great guide if you’re on your spiritual journey.
This was the story Prince was starting to write before he passed. If you’re a Prince fan (even if you’re not), you’ll enjoy reading/listening to his side of his story. The story was completed by the editor (Dan Pipenbring) he chose to co-author the book with him.
This was a fun read because it was all experiments about interacting with the Universe. You literally “test” the Universe (or God, Source - your choice). This is the book that guided me to connect with yellow butterflies. Try it. It’s fun!
This was a recommendation from a friend and found that I wanted to whip out my journal and take notes every time I listened to it. This book is full of great takeaways to jot down and reflect upon.
During the pandemic shut down, I didn’t know what the heck to do with these kids. I came across this book and thought it would be a great lesson for them. Every day for a week, the hubby and I got the kids up early and had them listen to a chapter. We gave them assignments. One of them ended up a with a summer business after this workshop. He actually had clients and opened his first bank account with his earnings.
I was fascinated by Anita’s story. I found her while listening to all those near-death experiences (NDE’s). In the hospital, she literally died of a debilitating form of cancer and came back to life. While she was “dead,” she learned that when she came back to the living, she would be completely healed. And she was.
I learned about this author, Gabby Bernstein, through one of Oprah’s Super Soul Sundays that aired on YouTube. Her story of hitting rock bottom and then using meditation to come out of that place is so inspiring. I’ve listened to this one more than twice now. I love her style of storytelling so much, I’ve taken her book writing master class.
When I found this title, it was right on time. I needed a pick me up so I downloaded it immediately. I like how the author tells her story. I’m pretty sure we could be friends.
I need to listen to this one again, but I know that I like Simon Sinek’s conversational and practical style. He seems so down-to-earth and offers a unique way to connect with others.
I learned about the author, Eckhart Tolle, through Oprah. You have to be in the right mindset for this book. It’s deep. I found myself rewinding this alot just to make sure I was grasping the concepts. It was so enlightening.
